Multilingual eye-tracking data collection for human and machine language processing research (MultiplEYE-DK)
MultiplEYE DK aims to collect eye-tracking data from reading in several languages: Danish, Kalaallisut (West Greenlandic) and Italian.
The multilingual eye-tracking corpus created by MultiplEYE-DK will be part of a large multilingual collection of eye-tracking data managed by MultiplEYE, a European Research Cost Action. The cost action will enable researchers to apply psycholinguistic and machine reading methods to the study of human and automatic language processing in many different languages and to share this knowledge via a common research infrastructure. In the Danish project, we will focus our analyses on reading patterns for Danish, Kalaallisut and Italian – three languages that display quite different syntax and morphology characteristics, and which therefore present the reader with very different challenges.
The project aims at collecting eye-tracking read data in Danish, Kalaallisut and Italian. Danish is especially important to include due to the inconsistent relationship between orthography and phonology. Kalaallisut is particularly interesting because it has an extremely complex morphology and no studies currently exist of how such a language is read or processed psycholinguistically. Italian is known for having a transparent orthography, offering an interesting comparison with Danish; moreover, very few studies have currently investigated reading behavior with eye-tracking in Italian.
MultiplEYE DK will collect a large dataset in the three languages using a standardized reading task battery developed by the MultiplEYE Cost Action. This approach will enable robust, large-scale analysis that can significantly advance natural language processing and psycholinguistic applications.
